Camel Trekking in Merzouga: The Complete Guide

Riding a dromedary into the dunes of Erg Chebbi is the most traditional way to discover the Sahara. For centuries the caravans crossed this desert with salt, dates and spices. Here is everything you should know.

Camel or dromedary?

In Morocco the animals have one hump: they are dromedaries, but everyone calls them camels. Ours live with our families in Merzouga and are calm and used to people.

Which ride to choose

Is it comfortable?

Yes. The saddles are padded with a handle in front, and the cameleer walks beside you the whole time. The movement is slow and rocking. After one or two hours some people feel their legs; long trousers help a lot.

Children and older travellers

Children from about four years can ride, alone or with a parent. For people with back problems we recommend short rides or going to the camp by 4×4 and enjoying the sunset on foot.

Respect for the animals

Our camels work short hours, rest in the shade, eat well and are never overloaded. Please do not feed them yourself and listen to your cameleer.

What to wear

Long trousers, closed shoes or sandals, sunglasses and the Berber scarf we give you. In winter, a warm layer for the way back after sunset.
