Sunset Camel Ride in Erg Chebbi

2 hoursErg ChebbiEasyPrivate

Two hours on a dromedary at golden hour, with mint tea on top of a high dune while the Sahara turns red and the first stars appear.

This is the moment everyone comes to Merzouga for. About ninety minutes before sunset the caravan leaves the village and walks slowly into Erg Chebbi. The light gets warmer with every step, the shadows of the camels stretch across the sand and the noise of the village disappears behind the first dunes.

We leave the camels at the foot of a high dune and climb the last metres on foot. From the top you see the sea of sand in every direction, the black desert in the distance and the sun dropping behind the mountains. Your cameleer prepares mint tea, and you ride back as the sky turns violet and the first stars come out.

Good to know

Long trousers are more comfortable on a camel. Sunset rides leave about 90 minutes before sunset, sunrise rides about an hour before dawn: we confirm the exact time when you book.

No payment is needed to book: you pay on arrival in cash (dirhams or euros). Free changes if the weather is not good.

Questions

Is the camel ride comfortable?

Yes. Our dromedaries are calm and used to visitors, the saddles are padded and have a handle, and the cameleer walks beside you. Hold on tight when the camel stands up and sits down: that is the only tricky moment.

Can children ride a camel?

Yes, from about four years old, sitting alone or with a parent depending on their age. For very young children we suggest the one-hour ride.

What should I wear?

Long, comfortable trousers, closed shoes or sandals, sunglasses and a warm layer for the evening. We give you a Berber scarf to protect your head from the sun and the sand.

Sunset or sunrise?

Both are beautiful. Sunset is warmer and more lively; sunrise is quieter and cooler, ideal in summer. If you sleep in our camp you get both.
