The desert beyond the dunes
Around Erg Chebbi the Sahara has many faces that most visitors never see: the hamada, a plain of black stones where nomad families still live with their goats and camels; the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji, where flamingos sometimes stop in spring; the old lead mines of Mifis; the fossil quarries; and the village of Khamlia, home of the Gnawa musicians.
A 4x4 is the best way to see them all in one day, with a driver who grew up here and who knows the families and the tracks. We stop for tea in a nomad tent, listen to Gnawa music, walk in the old ksar of Rissani and finish, if you like, at the foot of the dunes for the sunset or at our camp for the night.
