Camel treks in Merzouga

Ride calm dromedaries into the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi with a cameleer from Merzouga: one hour, sunset, sunrise, a night in our camp or two days in the deep desert.

Good to know

The camel, the oldest way to cross the Sahara

For centuries the caravans that crossed the Sahara stopped in the oases of Tafilalet, around Merzouga, to trade salt, gold, dates and spices. Riding a dromedary into Erg Chebbi is the same slow journey: no engine, only the sound of the steps on the sand and the voice of the cameleer leading the caravan.

Our dromedaries live with our families in Merzouga and are used to visitors of every age. Each one has a padded saddle with a handle, and the cameleer walks beside you the whole time. You do not need any experience: you only have to sit, hold on when the camel stands up and enjoy the view of the dunes changing colour.

Questions

Is the camel ride comfortable?

Yes. Our dromedaries are calm and used to visitors, the saddles are padded and have a handle, and the cameleer walks beside you. Hold on tight when the camel stands up and sits down: that is the only tricky moment.

Can children ride a camel?

Yes, from about four years old, sitting alone or with a parent depending on their age. For very young children we suggest the one-hour ride.

What should I wear?

Long, comfortable trousers, closed shoes or sandals, sunglasses and a warm layer for the evening. We give you a Berber scarf to protect your head from the sun and the sand.

Sunset or sunrise?

Both are beautiful. Sunset is warmer and more lively; sunrise is quieter and cooler, ideal in summer. If you sleep in our camp you get both.
