2-Day Camel Trek Across Erg Chebbi

2 days · 1 nightErg ChebbiMediumPrivate

For travellers who want more than one night: cross the great dunes from side to side by camel, sleep in a small nomad camp in the deep desert and walk with the caravan like the old traders.

This trek takes you far from the camps near the village. On the first afternoon the caravan heads east into the heart of Erg Chebbi, riding and walking in turns, and stops for the sunset on the highest dunes. The night is spent in a small nomad camp with simple tents, a fire and a dinner cooked under the stars.

On the second morning, after sunrise and breakfast, the caravan continues across the dunes to the other side of the erg. You learn to read the sand with your cameleer, see the tracks of foxes and beetles and rest in the shade for tea. A 4x4 picks you up at the end and drives you back to Merzouga around midday.

Questions

Is the camel ride comfortable?

Yes. Our dromedaries are calm and used to visitors, the saddles are padded and have a handle, and the cameleer walks beside you. Hold on tight when the camel stands up and sits down: that is the only tricky moment.

Can children ride a camel?

Yes, from about four years old, sitting alone or with a parent depending on their age. For very young children we suggest the one-hour ride.

What should I wear?

Long, comfortable trousers, closed shoes or sandals, sunglasses and a warm layer for the evening. We give you a Berber scarf to protect your head from the sun and the sand.

Sunset or sunrise?

Both are beautiful. Sunset is warmer and more lively; sunrise is quieter and cooler, ideal in summer. If you sleep in our camp you get both.
