Sunrise Camel Ride in Merzouga

2 hoursErg ChebbiEasyPrivate

Leave in the blue light before dawn and watch the sun rise over Erg Chebbi from the top of a dune, in the calmest and coolest hours of the day.

The desert is never as quiet as at dawn. We pick you up while it is still dark, and the caravan walks into the dunes in a cool blue light, with only the sound of the camels' steps on the sand. In summer this is the most pleasant time to ride; in winter, bring a warm layer for the first half hour.

On the crest of a dune we wait for the sun. First the sky turns pink, then a line of fire appears over the horizon and the whole of Erg Chebbi lights up in orange in a few minutes. After the photos we ride back to the village for breakfast, with the whole day still in front of you.

Good to know

Long trousers are more comfortable on a camel. Sunset rides leave about 90 minutes before sunset, sunrise rides about an hour before dawn: we confirm the exact time when you book.

No payment is needed to book: you pay on arrival in cash (dirhams or euros). Free changes if the weather is not good.

Questions

Is the camel ride comfortable?

Yes. Our dromedaries are calm and used to visitors, the saddles are padded and have a handle, and the cameleer walks beside you. Hold on tight when the camel stands up and sits down: that is the only tricky moment.

Can children ride a camel?

Yes, from about four years old, sitting alone or with a parent depending on their age. For very young children we suggest the one-hour ride.

What should I wear?

Long, comfortable trousers, closed shoes or sandals, sunglasses and a warm layer for the evening. We give you a Berber scarf to protect your head from the sun and the sand.

Sunset or sunrise?

Both are beautiful. Sunset is warmer and more lively; sunrise is quieter and cooler, ideal in summer. If you sleep in our camp you get both.
