What to Pack for the Sahara Desert: Our Practical List
Clothes, shoes, a bag for the night in the camp and the small things you will be glad to have in the dunes of Merzouga.

Packing for the desert is simple once you know two things: the days can be hot and the nights cold, and the sand gets everywhere. This is the list we give to our guests.
Clothes
- Long, light trousers: more comfortable on a camel and they protect from the sun.
- Long-sleeved shirt or T-shirt in light colours.
- A warm layer: fleece or down jacket from October to April. Nights can be cold.
- A scarf or hat: we give you a Berber scarf, but a cap is useful.
Shoes
Sandals or light trainers are perfect. In summer the sand burns at midday, so do not walk barefoot except at sunrise and sunset. Heavy hiking boots are not necessary.
A small bag for the night
When you go to the camp by camel, you leave your big luggage with us or in the vehicle. Prepare a small backpack with:
- Toothbrush, toiletries and medicines
- Warm layer and something to sleep in
- Phone charger (our tents have electricity)
- A torch or headlamp to walk around the camp at night
Protection
- Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm
- Water: we provide it, but a reusable bottle is a good idea
- A plastic bag to protect your camera and phone from sand
What you do not need
No need for sleeping bags, towels or food: everything is included in the camp. And leave expensive jewellery at the hotel.
For photographers
Change lenses inside the tent, not in the wind. Bring a soft brush to clean the camera. The best light is the hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise.
