What Is a Night in a Merzouga Desert Camp Like?

A night in the dunes is the reason many people travel to Morocco. Here is how it happens in our camp in Erg Chebbi, hour by hour.

17:00 – The caravan

We meet at the edge of the dunes. You leave your big luggage with us, take a small bag and meet your cameleer. Our dromedaries are calm and used to visitors; the only tricky moment is when they stand up, so hold on tight.

18:30 – Sunset from a high dune

After about an hour and a half of walking, the caravan stops at the foot of a big dune. You climb the last metres on foot and watch the sand change from gold to red. It is the moment everyone remembers.

19:30 – Arrival at the camp

Our camp is hidden in a quiet hollow, far from the road. Each tent has a real bed with warm blankets, a private bathroom with hot shower and toilet, light and plugs.

20:00 – Dinner

Dinner is cooked in the camp: harira or vegetable soup, Moroccan salads, a tajine of chicken, lamb or vegetables, fruit and mint tea. Vegetarian and other diets are prepared on request.

21:30 – Drums and stars

Around the fire, our team plays Berber drums and sings. Then the fire goes down and the sky takes over: thousands of stars and, on moonless nights, the Milky Way from horizon to horizon.

06:30 – Sunrise

Wake up before dawn and climb the dune behind the camp. The silence is total. After breakfast (bread, pancakes, jam, eggs, coffee and tea) you ride back to Merzouga.

Practical questions

  • Is it cold? From November to February nights are cold, but the tents are closed and warm.
  • Is it safe? Yes, our team stays in the camp all night.
  • Can children come? Yes, we have family tents.

Book the camel trek and night in our camp or stay longer with 2 nights in the dunes.
